Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a serious and potentially life-threatening sleep disorder that afflicts nearly 18 million Americans of which approximately 5% have been diagnosed with a sleep study (Polysomnography). Sleep disorders affect both men and women and can lead to decreased work productivity, increase incidence of motor vehicle collisions when attempting to operate a motor vehicle while being drowsy, as well as being an underlying symptom contributing to a more serious degree of cardiovascular disease, congestive heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, hypertension, diabetes, stroke and other types of health risks. The good news is that once OSA is properly diagnosed, highly effective treatments are available.
The challenge is that there are only 3,000 sleep labs across America with an average capacity of 2-4 sleep studies per night. With only 5-6 days per week of operation, it will take these existing sleep labs 10 years to process all the people who are at risk during this year alone.
